Why reuse can be a problem
An instructor expects new work responding to the current prompt. Undisclosed reuse can misrepresent what was completed for the course.
When limited reuse may be allowed
Reuse may be acceptable when the instructor explicitly approves it and you disclose and cite the earlier work as required.
What to do before submitting
- Compare both assignment policies
- Ask the instructor in writing
- Identify every reused passage or idea
- Create substantial new analysis for the current task
When in doubt
Treat the earlier paper as background notes, return to the sources, and build a fresh response to the new question.
