Précis is a French word that means summary. Thus, writing a rhetorical précis is all about writing a summary of a text. A rhetorical précis is a four-sentence paragraph. A précis of a text should never be more than a fifth of the text being summarized. Summarizing published texts is something that your professor will ask you to do now and then. First sentence
The first sentence is what tells the audience the author, the title of the text, and the main thesis. Thus, it should contain the author's name, the text's title, the date, a correct rhetorical verb, and a clause containing the thesis statement.
Second sentence
The second sentence informs the audience how the author has developed and organized the text.
Third sentence
The third sentence explores the purpose of the text and the effect that he/she hoped to produce. Every text written has a purpose. Did the author intend to educate, entertain, or even criticize the audience?
Fourth sentence
This is the final sentence in your rhetorical précis. In this sentence, you need to tell us who the text's intended audience was. You can also include the text's tone in this sentence since the tone can also help explain who is the intended or the assumed audience. The tone also helps explain how the author relates to the audience.
