Academic Integrity and Turnitin: How to Improve Originality

Updated for the new Paper Per Hour: This guide supports independent learning and responsible academic work.

This page has been rewritten. The previous article promoted attempts to evade Turnitin. Paper Per Hour does not support bypassing plagiarism detection or misrepresenting authorship.

What a similarity report means

A similarity score shows text that overlaps with material in comparison databases. It is not, by itself, a finding of plagiarism. Instructors review the context, quotations, citations, common phrases, and assignment rules.

Do not manipulate the document

Hidden characters, substituted symbols, images of text, intentional misspellings, and other evasion techniques undermine learning and may create additional misconduct concerns.

Improve originality legitimately

  1. Write from your own understanding rather than editing copied sentences.
  2. Quote exact language and cite it correctly.
  3. Paraphrase by restating the idea and structure independently.
  4. Attribute distinctive ideas, data, methods, and media.
  5. Keep source details attached to your notes.

Review flagged passages

For each match, decide whether it is a correctly quoted passage, a citation or common phrase, an inadequate paraphrase, or unattributed copying. Revise the last two categories and consult your instructor when uncertain.

Use AI within the rules

Follow the institution’s AI policy, disclose assistance when required, and never use generated text to disguise copied work. You remain responsible for sources, accuracy, and authorship.

Use Paper Per Hour to study the topic

Add permitted course materials to a focused session, ask grounded questions, and create summaries, flashcards, or practice tests. Verify important claims against the original source.
